Usher's Board Motto

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.  Knowing that the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Introduction

Ushering is "the ministry of greeting, seating, and accommodating the overall comfort of worshippers in the house of the Lord with the purpose of minimizing distractions".

Definition of an Usher
  • AMBASSADOR FOR THE CHURCH: As people walk into the church for the first time, the usher should extend a friendly greeting which serve as a which representation of Christ and the church.  This will enable the visitor to have a better attitude and frame of mind to hear the sermon that will be preached and also form a good opinion of the church.
  • A SERVANT: One who serves the Pastor and the congregation and assists them in whatsoever way possible for them to enjoy the worship service.
  • A WATCHMAN OR WATCHWOMAN: One who will watch over the service and anticipate problems as they arise, watching for disturbances and handling them in the quickest, most diplomatic way possible.  Making sure the worshippers are well cared for and made comfortable in the House of God.
  • A HOST: One who friendly greets and seats the congregation comfortably.  Special effort is given to find comfortable seating and treating all visitors as honored guest.
  • A DAD OR MOM: To those boys and girls that are present but without Mom, Dad, or another adult, the usher will monitor and friendly correct behavior as needed.
  • A DISCIPLINARIAN: One who must know how to control children and teenagers in a firm yet kind and loving way.

Qualifications of a Great Usher

  • Must be willing and want to be used in the house of God regardless of what position or duty.
  • An effective usher must live a holy and sanctified life both inside and outside the church.
  • Must be friendly, easy to work with ,and cheerful.
  • Must be time oriented-in other words, they must be on time for their assignment.
  • Must be dedicated and faithful regardless of what the job entail or include without any complaining.
  • Must be dependable.
  • Must be always ready to serve, even when they are not scheduled to be on duty.
  • Ushering requires much standing and walking, so one must consider their physical strengths and abilities.
  • Must be willing to take initiative and not wait to take on tasks within their job scope - in other words, if you see that something needs to be done, don't wait to be instructed to take care of it, just do it.
For a day in thy courts is better than thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, then to swell in tents of wickedness. Psalms 84:10
